IFANS consists of the Office of the Chancellor, the Office of Research, the Office of Education and Training, and the Administration Division. It also has a group of Research Commissioners consisting of Ambassadors at large.
The Chancellor
The Chancellor, with the rank of Vice Minister, heads IFANS and supervises research and educational activities as well as administrative affairs under the direction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The Dean of Research
The Dean of Research is responsible for planning and conducting the research activities of the Institute. These activities are carried out by the following five research departments: Department for National Security and Unification Studies, Department for Asian and Pacific Studies, Department for American Studies, Department for European and African Studies, Department for International Economy and Trade Studies. The research departments consists of 15 full time research professors with doctoral degrees, 8 research assistants and a number of senior foreign service officers. The composition of the research body helps to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical perspectives. Joint research groups of professors and career diplomats are frequently organized to reconcile theory with practice. The Planning and Research Division provides both logistic and adminstrative assistance to the Dean of Research in planning and managing research activities. This division supervises the entire publication process. All international and domestic conferences and seminars are also orgainzed by this division. The library houses a collection of documents including the official reports of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), publications, periodicals, online data base, foreign newspapers, dissertations, and the official reports of international organizations including the UN and OECD.
The Dean of Education and Training
The Dean of Education and Training is responsible for planning, organizing and training acrivities of the Institute. These activities are carried out by two divisions. The Education and Training division plans and organizes programs for professional education and job training. The Foreign Language Training Division is responsible for foreign language training programs and conducts regular foreign language competence tests. It also plans and organizes all overseas training programs.
The Administration Division
The Administration Division renders administrative services for the staff of the Institute.
The Office of Diplomatic Competency Assessment
The Office of Diplomatic Competency Assessment is responsible for diplomatic competency assessment and development programs.
