On March 10, 2025, the Department of International Trade and Economic Security Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) hosted the 1st IFANS International Trade and Diplomacy Seminar of 2025 under the theme, “Exploring Avenues for Korea-U.S. Cooperation in the Shipbuilding Industry.”
With the inauguration of the second Trump administration, discussions have emerged regarding potential cooperation between Korea and the U.S. in the shipbuilding sector. In response, the seminar provided a platform to assess the current state of Korea’s shipbuilding industry in the global market, explore possible trade diplomacy agendas with the U.S., and formulate negotiation strategies. Experts shared insights and exchanged views on these key issues.
Distinguished external participants included Emeritus Professor SHIN Jong-kyu at Seoul National University and Advisor at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering; Senior Research Fellow YANG Jong-seo at the Export-Import Bank of Korea; and Research Fellow LEE Eun-chang at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade.
From the IFANS side, KNDA Chancellor CHOI Hyoung-chan, Counselor CHO Taiyoung of the Center for Japanese Studies, Director-General CHOI Wooseon of the Department of International Security and Unification Studies, Director-General HWANG In-sang of the Department of International Trade and Economic Security Studies, Associate Professor LEE Hyo Young, Assistant Professor OH Seung Hee, and Resarch Professor EOM Do Young participated in the seminar.
