Joint Academic Conference on the 30th Anniversary of the ROK’s Admission to the UN  Upload Date 2021-09-17 Hits 954
On September 17, 2012, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA), the Seoul International Law Academy (SILA), and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) co-hosted an academic conference on the topic of “Korean Diplomacy in the UN and the Role of International Law” to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the simultaneous admission of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the UN. 
 

 

The conference was arranged to help formulate Korean diplomacy’s strategies and visions at the UN, based on international law, by assessing and drawing implications from South Korea’s practices and achievements at the UN and affiliated organizations in terms of international human rights law, international maritime law, and international environmental law.
 

After the opening remarks of Board Chairman KIM Seok Woo of the Seoul International Law Academy, and IFANS President OH Youngju’s welcoming remarks, and the congratulatory remarks of Head YANG Hee Cheol of Ocean Law and Policy Institute at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Former Vice Minister SHIN Kak-soo of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea presented on “South Korea’s 30th Anniversary of UN Membership and Another 30 Years.”
 
Professor LEE Jaemin at Seoul National University moderated Session 1 held on the topic of “Multilateral Diplomacy in the UN and the Role of International Law,” and Director RHEE Zha Hyoung of International Legal Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Dr. SHIM Sang Min at the Sejong Institute, and Professor WON Yu Min at Seoul National University had in-depth discussions on international law at the UN and South Korea’s contribution to promoting the rule of law, and sustainable development goals set by the UN and South Korea’s participation.
 

Professor CHOI Tae Hyun at Hanyang University moderated Session 2 held on the topic of “Human Rights Issues at the UN and Inter-Korean Relations, and Professor BAEK Buhm-Suk at Kyung Hee University, Dr. JUNG Dae Jin at Han Peace Institute, Dr. LEE Joo Young at Seoul National University Human Rights Center, and Professor LIM Ye Joon at Korea University discussed the UN mechanism for human rights and South Korea’s practices, and inter-Korean relations after the two Koreas’ simultaneous admission to the UN and international law’s tasks ahead.
 
Professor JEONG Seo Young at Korea University moderated Session 3, and Head KIM Ki Hyun of Green Diplomacy Division of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Dr. KIM Won Hee at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Dr. PARK Young Gil at the Korea Marine Institute, and Dr. SUH Won Sang at Korea Polar Research Institute had meaningful discussions on South Korea’s environmental diplomacy and global environmental governance, and the UN and South Korea’s maritime law practices.
 

Professor KIM Dok-ju (IFANS) moderated Session 4, and Professor PARK Gi Gap at Korea University, Former Permanent Representative CHO Tae Yeol of the Republic of Korea to the UN, and Professor JEONG In Sub at Seoul National University had in-depth discussions on the path South Korea has taken since its admission to the UN, and ways forward. 
 
The list of participants includes: Associate Professor NAM Seung Hyun (IFANS), Research Professor YOO Joon Ku (IFANS), Assistant Professor SONG Ji Sun, and Researchers LEE Hyun Ju and KIM Min Seung.
