On October 27, 2021, the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the first India-Korea 2+2 Bilateral Dialogue under the title of “Reimagining India- Korea Relations in the Emerging Regional Order.”
The 2+2 bilateral dialogue was c0-organized by a pair of foreign policy and economic policy research institutions in Korea and their counterparts in India. The participating research institutions are Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KDNA), Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) of the Republic of Korea, and the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) of India.
The participants discussed various topics including the emerging global and regional order and Korea-India relations, the post-COVID-19 international economic order and Korea-India bilateral economic cooperation, and prospects for bilateral relations between India and Korea.
In his opening remarks, KNDA Chancellor Hong Hyun-ik underscored that the international community is calling for a greater role of responsible middle powers such as Korea and India in the post-COVID-19 era. Chancellor Hong also stressed that Korea and India need to spearhead efforts to navigate unprecedented challenges in dealing with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, current and future pandemics, vaccine production and supplies, digital transformation, and climate change by synergizing the ‘Act East Policy’ and the ‘New Southern Policy.’
Participants including President Kim Heung-chong of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), Director-General Vijay Thakur Singh of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), and Director-General Sachin Chaturvedi of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) also expressed their hopes that the 2+2 dialogue would serve as a platform to share innovative ways to deepen the relationship between Korea and India.
In their congratulatory remarks, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India, Chang Jae-bok, and Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea, Sripriya Ranganathan, remarked that they believe the 2+2 dialogue would make a meaningful contribution in bolstering and broadening the scope of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
