Academic Conference on Emerging Technologies and International Law Upload Date 2022-06-03 Hits 772
On June 3, 2022, Center for International Law hosted an academic conference sponsored by The Chosun Ilbo on the topic of “Emerging Technologies and International Law: Pressing Issues and Korea’s Response.” 

The conference was arranged to discuss how the new South Korean government should respond to the intensifying global race to shape norms governing emerging technologies. Renowned experts and eminent scholars were brought together to shed light on the most pressing issues and explore ways to navigate the growing rivalry in the field of emerging technology between states. 


 

 


 

KNDA Chancellor HONG Hyun ik delivered his opening remarks to kick off the event, and in the opening session moderated by KNDA Professor KIM Dok-ju, panelists including Former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs SHIN Gak-soo, Professor LEE Keun-Gwan at Seoul National University School of Law and Senior Reporter LEE Hawon of The Chosun Ilbo shared their insights on global norm-setting efforts in the field of emerging technologies and latest developments. 
 

In session 1 held under the theme of “Emerging technologies and Security: Challenges of Applying International Law” with Former UN Under-Secretary-General KIM Won-soo as moderator, panelists including Professor PARK Nohyoung at Korea University School of Law, Dr. Park Mun Eon Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, Dr. JUNG Yungjin, Senior Researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and Research Professor YOO Joonkoo of the KNDA offered insights and discussed the challenges ahead for the new Korean government.   
 


The theme of Session 2 was “Emerging Technologies and Environment: Standardizing Global Norms in the Area of Climate Change and Energy,” and President LEE Yong-ho of the Korean Society of International. Law served as moderator. Professor SUNG Jae-ho at Sungkyunkwan University Law School, Professor CHUNG Suh-Yong at Korea University, Professor SO Byung-Chun at Ajou University Law School, and Dr. SHIM Sangmin, Research Fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies participated as panelists to discuss relevant issues. 
 


Session 3 was moderated by Ambassador IM Han-taek, Visiting professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Arranged under the theme of “Emerging Technologies and Human Rights: Setting the International Community on a Better Path with International Law,” the Session brought together Professor JUNG Kyung Soo at Sookmyung Women's University, Dr. PARK Jinah, Senior Researcher at Korea University, Deputy Director-General LEE Dong-jun of Human Rights and Social Affairs Division (MOFA) and KNDA Professor NAM Seung hyun to delve into a wide range of issues relating to human rights and emerging technologies.
