Open Seminar on Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Cooperation and Korea’s Vision for a “Global Pivotal State” Upload Date 2023-05-16 Hits 663
On May 16, 2023, the Department of American Studies held an open seminar on the topic of “Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Cooperation and Korea’s Vision for a Global Pivotal State.” The meeting was arranged to discuss why Korea, the U.S., and Japan should foster deeper cooperation, and share ideas on ways to realize the Yoon Suk Yeol government’s vision to make Korea a “Global Pivotal State” with a focus on achieving a free, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
 
 


Session 1 was held under the theme of “A Changing World Order and Implications for Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Cooperation.” IFANS President LEE Moon hee gave his opening remarks, and with Director-General KIM Jang Hyun as moderator, Professor PARK Young-June at Korea National Defense University (presenter), Deputy Director-General HAM Hyeongpil of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (presenter), IFANS Professor JO Yanghyeon, and Senior Research Fellow LEE Ho Ryoung at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses participated in the session for in-depth discussions.
 
 


The topic of Session 2 was “Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Cooperation and Korea’s Global Pivotal State Vision.” With IFANS Professor KIM Taehwan as moderator, Former ROK Ambassador to Japan SHIN Kak-soo (presenter), Ambassador for Economic Security and Professor at Seoul National University LEE Jaemin (presenter), IFANS Professor JUN Hae-won, and Professor AHN Se Hyun at the University of Seoul participated to share their insights and perspectives.
 

At the end of the second session, IFANS and outside experts took questions from the press and audiences. The Korea National Diplomatic Academy plans to hold various open seminars in the coming months to provide our experts’ insights on a broad array of foreign policy issues and to improve communication between the Korean government and the public.
