On March 29, 2021, Center for International Law of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) invited experts for a workshop on the topic of “The Economics of Climate Change: Climate Change Stress Testing and Corporate Carbon Emission Efficiency.”
With the dawning of the Biden era, it is anticipated that the issue of tackling climate change will likely take center stage in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. The expert workshop was arranged to examine the current status of the Korean government’s climate change policy as well as climate diplomacy aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and draw implications by analyzing and evaluating how the costs and benefits of formulating and implementing responses to climate change will affect national economies and companies around the world by employing the latest methods of economic analysis.
Participants had in-depth discussions on the current state of and the recent trend in economic research on climate change, the review and evaluation of climate change policies implemented by the world’s economies including South Korea, a scenario-based analysis of the prospective impact of implementing carbon taxes on individual national economies and banks’ capital adequacy around the world, and implications of an increase in a rate of return of investments in firms with high carbon efficiency based on their analysis of the U.S. case and data.
The list of participants includes: Professor PARK Ki Young (School of Economics, Yonsei University); Research Director on Sustainable Finance (Global Projects Center, Stanford University); and IFANS President OH Youngju; Professor SHIM Sangmin, Head of Center for International Law; Director-General KIM Dok-ju of Dept. of European and Russian Studies; and other IFANS professors and researchers.
