Executive summary
>
On February 4, U.S. President Donald Trump, during a joint press conference following a summit with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared his intention to “take over” and rebuild the Gaza Strip. The plan also included relocating the majority of Gaza’s residents to external locations - not temporarily, but permanently. This unexpected announcement came at a time when the Gaza crisis, which began with Hamas’s surprise attack in October 2023, had entered the first phase of a ceasefire. Given that Trump made these unexpected remarks during his first summit just two weeks after his inauguration, they sent shockwaves not only across the U.S. but also throughout the international community. The key points, background, and implications of the announcement are as follows.
