Education Program for Participants from the Asia-Pacific Region

Provided by the 2016 Seoul Academy of International Law

The Center for International Law at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) launched an opening ceremony of the 2016 Seoul Academy of International Law on July 4, 2016.

Numerous representatives participated in the event including: Second Vice Minister CHO Tae-yul of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (keynote speech), Chancellor YUN Duk-min of the KNDA (welcoming remarks), Director SHIN Kak-soo of Center for International Law at the KNDA (opening address), Professor Lori F. Damrosch of Columbia University (congratulatory address), and Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Stephen Mathias of the UN. Also at the event were ambassadors of participants’ home countries.

The Seoul Academy of International Law is a program that will be held for ten days from July 4 to 15, 2016, and offers lectures by prominent judges at international courts, high-level officials at international organizations and scholars to 42 participants—diplomats, government officials, scholars, researchers, and graduate students in the field of international law—from 18 Asian-Pacific countries including Korea.

The Seoul Academy of International Law, kicked off this year, will be held annually in order to promote the understanding with respect to major foreign affairs of participants' countries and issues related to international law, and to expand the support base and establish network for Korean issues involving international law.
