KNDA to Open “2018 Seoul Academy of International Law”

From July 2 to 13, 2018, Center for International Law at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the 2018 Seoul Academy of International Law - a two-week international law program.

This year marks the third round of the Seoul Academy of International Law, which was first hosted in 2016. 48 participants from 22 countries of the Asia-Pacific region including South Korea attended this year's Academy. With the faculty comprising the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and South Korean and foreign scholars in the field of international law, the program provided participants with lectures on various international law issues across East Asia and in the global arena.

During the Completion Ceremony of 2017 Seoul Academy of International Law, IFANS President PAIK Ji-ah, Director SHIN Kak-soo of Center for International Law, and Professor Tullio TREVES of International Law at the University of Milan congratulated participants on successfully completing the program.

By offering lectures and discussions on major international law issues such as territory and oceans, treaties, investment arbitration, dispute settlement and international humanitarian law, the 2018 Seoul Academy of International Law provided its participants with an opportunity to improve their understanding of current diplomatic issues in the Asia-Pacific region and issues related to internatinoal law in Korea. On top of that, the Academy contributed to reinforcing the ROK's role as the hub of international law in the region by spearheading efforts to forge an East Asian network in the field of international law.

The Seoul Academy of International Law will be held on an annual basis for the purposes of the development of international law and establishment of the rule of law.
