On November 8, 2022, Center for ASEAN-Indian Studies held the 4th ROK-ASEAN Think Tank Strategic Dialogue on the theme of “ROK, ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific: Uncertainties, Commitments and Future Undertakings.”
This year's dialogue brought together eminent scholars and experts from Korea and ASEAN to share views on various topics. Participants shared their perspectives on the unfolding regional dynamics in the Indo-Pacific and their implications for regional countries; the role of Korea’s Indo-Pacific strategy in moving Korea-ASEAN relations forward; and ways to advance and upgrade the ASEAN-ROK partnership in the coming years.
In his opening remarks, KNDA Chancellor HONG Hyun-Ik stressed that Korea and ASEAN have strong incentives to create new strategic partnerships and alignments in the face of multiple challenges erupting on all fronts, such as the intensifying U.S.-China tech rivalry and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
H.E. LIM Sungnam, former First Vice Foreign Minister of the ROK and former ROK Ambassador to ASEAN, delivered a keynote address in the opening session. In his inspiring speech, Ambassador Lim highlighted imagination and perseverance as the key to creating a solid ROK-ASEAN strategic partnership that will steer us through the emerging geopolitical challenges of our time. Deputy Director-General KIM Dong-bae for ASEAN and Southeast Asian Affairs Bureau at MOFA also gave a special presentation on “ROK’s Policy toward Southeast Asia under President Yoon Suk Yeol” to share his ideas and enrich the conversation between Korean and ASEAN experts.
