From June 10-11, 2021, Center for Diplomatic History Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held an oral history session on the topic of “The Simultaneous Admission of the ROK and DPRK to the United Nations.”
The meeting was held to mark the 30th anniversary of the two Koreas’ simultaneous accession to the United Nations and gather testimonies from the policy-makers who actively engaged in negotiations to simultaneously admit both countries to the UN. Multiple testimonies and the diplomatic documents on the two Koreas’ admission to the UN offered valuable insights into Korea’s foreign policies formulated at the time to ensure the two countries’ admission; Korea’s policy towards the UN; how Korea approached the four powers geographically surrounding the country; and Korea’s unification policies. The testimonies and documents provided policy advice for incumbent policy makers.
The meeting was a two-day affair comprising seven sessions. Experts looked into the background of South Korea’s admission to the UN and inter-Korean relations; Korea’s foreign policy toward four major powers before and after the two Koreas’ simultaneous admission to the UN; former South Korean president Roh Tae-woo’s signature foreign policy Nordpolitik; and the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and China.
The list of interviewees includes: former consul general of South Korea to Guangzhou KIM Jang-hwan; Distinguished Professor KIM Hak-joon of Dankook University; former Prime Minister Roh Jae-bong; former State Minister PARK Chul-Un; Former Foreign Minister YOO Jong-ha; former Unification Minister LIM Dong-Won; former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt CHUNG Dal Ho. The interviewers were: Professor SHIN Jong Dae of the University of North Korean Studies; Professor EOM Gu Ho of Hanyang University; Professor LEE Dong Ryul of Dongduk Women's University; Professor LEE Jung-Chul of Seoul National University (SNU); Professor JUN Jaesung of SNU; and Professor CHO Dong-Joon of SNU. From the IFANS side, Head of Center for Diplomatic Historic Studies KIM Jong Hak, Research Professor LEE Sang-sook, Researcher JEONG Jong-hyuk and Researcher LEE Min Jin participated.
