International Law Meeting with Registrar of the International Court of Justice Philippe Gautier Upload Date 2022-05-30 Hits 2268
On May 30th, 2022, Center for International Law of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) invited Mr. Philippe Gautier, the registrar of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold a meeting.
 

The ICJ is the highest court in the world and the main judicial organ of the UN, and Mr. Philippe Gautier was appointed to the post of ICJ Registrar on 22 May 2019. He was the Registrar of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) since 2001, having served as Deputy-Registrar of the same Tribunal from 1997 to 2001. Prior to that, he had held the positions of Deputy Director, Head of the Law of the Sea/Antarctica Office (1991-1995), and Director, Head of the Treaties Division (1995-1997), at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 

Mr. Gautier’s meeting with the staff members of the Center took place after a special lecture session arranged by the KNDA for foreign services officer candidates, titled “Recent Trends of the ICJ Jurisprudence.”  At the meeting, Center experts introduced the KNDA and the Center to Mr. Gautier and walked him through the vision and achievements of the Seoul Academy of International Law (SAIL). The members of the Center also discussed ways to develop the SAIL into a regional hub connecting international experts in the East Asian region.
 

The list of participants included: Mr. Philippe Gautier, the registrar of the International Court of Justice;Second Secretary KIM Daeun (MOFA); Professor KIM Dok-ju (IFANS); Associate Professor NAM Seung Hyun (IFANS); Research Professor YOO Joonkoo (IFANS); and Researchers JUN Hyun Ji and LEE Hyunju (IFANS).
