International Law A Seminar on ‘2025 ICJ Advisory Opinion: Climate Change and Issues and Prospects of International Law' Upload Date 2025-08-27 Hits 270
On August 20, the Center for International Law at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) hosted a seminar themed ‘2025 Advisory Opinion: Climate Change and Issues and Prospects of International Law' jointly with The Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOC) Study Group -Korea and Ewha Legal Science Institute of Law School at Ewha Woman's University, taking place on the second floor of the KNDA main building. 
 

The seminar was arranged to review the content of the Advisory Opinion released by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 23, 2025, and to discuss key flashpoints in international law and global politics. 


Subsequent to welcoming remarks by Chancellor CHOE Hyoung-chan of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy and a key note speech by President PAIK Jin-Hyun of the Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOC) Study Group-Korea, the event featured presentations and discussions over climate change law, maritime law and human rights legal issues participated in by experts and practitioners in the climate change fields, including representatives from international law and policy institutes, academia, environmental organization, and the Climate Diplomacy Division and International Legal Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
 

Participants from outside of the KNDA were Professor KIM Young Sok (Director, Ewha Legal Science Institute, Law School at Ewha Woman's University), Dr. Wonhee Kim, (Director, Dept. of Ocean Law Research at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology), Professor KIM Hyun Jung (Dept. of Political Science, Yonsei University), BK21 Postdoctoral fellow PARK Somin, (Dept. of Political Science, Yonsei University), Professor PARK Siwon (Law School at Kangwon National University), Professor BAE Jong Yun (Dept. of Political Science, Yonsei University), Professor BAEK Beom-seok (Law School at Kyung Hee University), Researcher LIM Junghee (Ewha Legal Science Institute, Law School at Ewha Woman's University), Senior Researcher JANG Hyewon (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology), Senior Officer CHO Hong-rae (National Human Rights Commission of Korea), CHA Ji hyun (The Seoul National University Graduate School of International Studies), Research Intern Choi Yujin (Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice), Administrative Secretary CHOI Jangwon (SLOC), and Policy Activist CHOI Changmin (Plan 1.5), 


Present from the MOFA were Director KIM kyoung Hae (Climate Diplomacy Division, MOFA) and Second Secretary OH Hye Bin (International Law Division, MOFA).
