On November 11, 2021, Center for Diplomatic History of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held a joint academic conference with the Korean Association for Political and Diplomatic History on the topic of “Historical Changes in Great Power Competition and Korean Diplomacy.”
The conference was arranged to share an overview of historical developments of great power competition on the Korean peninsula, and the process of the Republic of Korea’s admission to the UN and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and USSR, and to draw implications for changing international order in the modern era and diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula.
The meeting was held in the order of Session 1 - History of Great Power Competition and Korean diplomacy, Session 2 - Analysis of Diplomatic Documents in 2021: the ROK’s Admission to the UN and Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the ROK and USSR, Session 3 - Changing International Order in the Modern Era, and Diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula. Participants also had discussions on international politics on the Korean Peninsula during the Ming–Qing transition, the Pacific War and diplomacy of the provisional government of the Republic of Korea, the San Francisco system, and strategic competition between the US and China and Korean diplomacy.
