On November 4, 2022, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) and the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) jointly held an academic conference at the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) in Seoul.
The conference was arranged to discuss the evolving competition for digital hegemony among major powers and its implications for emerging nations, and explore a broad array of development cooperation policies and initiatives in the area of digital transformation that are consistent with the new Korean government’s foreign policy vision. The meeting brought together many eminent scholars and experts to discuss a wide range of issues.
IFANS President LEE Choongmyon delivered his opening remarks, and Dr. SONG Chiung, Director at the Strategic Research Center for Cutting Edge Technology in the Asia-Pacific at the STEPI gave his welcoming remarks.
In session 1 moderated by Senior Research Fellow KIM Wang Dong at STEPI, Professor KIM So Young at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) presented on “U.S.-China Competition in the Digital Domain and Cooperation with Emerging Nations,” which was followed by an in-depth discussion among experts.
In the second session moderated by IFANS Professor JUN Bong-Geun, Research Fellow KIM Ji Hyun, Head of the Office of SDGs Innovation Research at STEPI, presented on the topic of “Korea’s Role in Supporting Emerging Nations’ Digital Transformation: Exploring a Demand-based Approach.” Participants shared valuable perspectives to build on the ideas presented by Dr. Kim and engaged in in-depth discussions.
