From February 20 to 22, 2023, Center for ASEAN-Indian Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) visited Bangkok, Thailand for academic interactions and meetings with Thailand’s renowned scholars and members of the diplomatic corps in Bangkok.
On February 21, the Center co-organized a public diplomacy seminar with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Thailand and the Institute of Security & International Studies (ISIS Thailand) on the topic of “Korea’s New Indo-Pacific Strategy and ASEAN: Opportunities and Challenges in the Emerging Indo-Pacific Geopolitics.” The seminar was attended by more than 80 participants including scholars, policy experts, and members of the diplomatic corps in Thailand. At the event, Professor CHOE Wongi gave an overview of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration’s new foreign policy vision, Strategy for a Free, Peaceful and Prosperous Indo-Pacific Region, and the Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI), and the Center’s experts interacted with their Thai counterparts to discuss detailed ways to upgrade the Korea-ASEAN relationship and strengthen Korea-Mekong cooperation. Participants also shared perspectives on ways to facilitate cooperation between Korea and Thailand and identified areas where the two countries can create synergy.
IFANS delegation to Thailand included Professor CHOE Wongi (Head of Center for ASEAN-Indian Studies), Former ROK Ambassador to Thailand CHUNG Hae Moon, Former ROK Ambassador to ASEAN SUH Jeong In, Research Professor CHO Won Deuk, and Researcher LEE Sang Hoon.
