The 5th ASEAN-ROK Think Tank Strategic Dialogue Upload Date 2023-11-10 Hits 977
The Center for ASEAN-Indian Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the 5th ASEAN-ROK Think Tank Strategic Dialogue under the theme of ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and ASEAN: Toward Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” from November 9 to 10, 2023.

This year’s strategic dialogue brought together the scholars, policy experts, and thought leaders of the ROK and ASEAN to discuss the geopolitics of the U.S.-China rivalry, assess the Indo-Pacific strategies, and map out the directions of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the ROK and ASEAN.

Chancellor PARK Cheol-hee of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy underscored in his welcome speech that ASEAN members are critical partners of the ROK in implementing its Indo-Pacific strategy as announced at the 2022 ROK-ASEAN summit, reiterating that the ROK and ASEAN need to flesh out concrete ways to advance cooperation and substantive measures to stimulate interactions to take the ASEAN-ROK comprehensive strategic cooperation further in 2024.

In his keynote speech, H.E. CHO Tae-yong, former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia, noted that there are already a wide range of shared values and understandings between the ROK and ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific, and the value of “inclusiveness” articulated in the ROK’s Indo-Pacific strategy will serve as an important element in advancing the ROK-ASEAN cooperation in the rapidly changing geopolitics and escalating hegemonic competition.
