On July 1~12, 2024, the Center for International Law Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) hosted the “2024 Seoul Academy of International Law” at the Diplomatic Town. This two-week program was attended by over 30 trainees including diplomats, scholars, and graduate students from South Korea and 19 other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since its inception in 2016, the "2024 Seoul Academy of International Law," now in its 9th year, has grown into a platform for nurturing international law talent in the Asia-Pacific region, thanks to the high interest from countries in the region. Renowned international law scholars and practitioners from international judicial bodies and organizations, both domestic and international, have participated as faculty members.
This year's "Seoul Academy of International Law" featured a distinguished faculty of 10 international law experts from both South Korea and abroad. The faculty included Radhika Coomaraswamy, former UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict; Marwa Shabbar, Legal Adviser of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation for East Asia; Hiroyuki Banzai, Professor of the School of Law at Waseda University; PAIK Jin-Hyun, former President and Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS); William W. Burke-White, Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School; CHOI Won-mog, Professor at Ewha Womans University Law School; Atsuko Kanehara, Research Director at the Canon Institute for Global Studies; Padideh Ala’i, Professor of Law at American University; Pavel Šturma, former Chair of the UN International Law Commission (ILC); and HWANG Joon-sik, Director-General for International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ROK. The program covered a balanced range of international legal issues on global agendas including the UN and international human rights, international humanitarian law, international maritime law, state responsibility, international trade, economic, and investment law, codification of international law, and South Korean diplomacy and international law.
Additionally, this year's academy saw the participation of 28 trainees including diplomats, scholars, and graduate students specializing in international law from South Korea and 19 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Over two weeks, they actively engaged in international law lectures and accompanying events through which they were able to enhance their understanding of various international law issues as well as South Korean diplomacy and culture.
