The Center for Diplomatic History Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the second seminar in the series, “President Syngman Rhee’s Perspective on International Politics and Independence Movement.”
■Expand an understanding of ‘diplomatic independence’ in the Korean independence movement
■Revisit the international political history surrounding the Korean Peninsula during the establishment of the Republic of Korea
■Analyze the impact of President Syngman Rhee’s diplomatic independence movement on the establishment of the ROK government
KNDA Chancellor CHOE Hyoung-chan delivered opening remarks, and Senior Advisor AHN Youngjip to the Center for Diplomatic History Studies moderated the seminar. Dr. YOO Ji-yoon, Research Professor at Yonsei University’s Syngman Rhee Research Institute, presented on “Syngman Rhee’s U.S. Diplomatic Network and Korea’s Independence.” Following the presentation, Mr. KIM Jung-min, Curatorial Research Team Leader, Syngman Rhee Presidential Memorial Foundation, delivered a presentation on “Japan Inside Out and President Rhee’s Understanding of International Affairs.” The following discussions were led by Research Fellow YOO Na-young at Sungshin Women’s University’s Institute for East Asian Studies, and Assistant Professor OH Seung Hee of the Department of Indo-Pacific Studies (IFANS/KNDA), focusing on the historical significance of President Rhee’s diplomatic network in the U.S. and his perception of international affairs.
