On November 6, 2024, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the 32nd Korea-China Academic Conference with the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS) in Beijing, China.
Established as an annual academic forum following the establishment of Korea-China diplomatic relations in 1992, the Korea-China Academic Conference serves as a regular dialogue platform to strengthen ties between the two countries. At this year’s closed sessions, IFANS and CIIS experts engaged in open discussions on key topics, including:
■ Enhancing cooperation in Korea-China economic, trade, and investment relations, as well as increasing people-to-people exchanges,
■ Long-term strategies for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and
■ Future cooperation between Korea and China.
The IFANS delegation led by Senior Executive Director LEE Moon Hee included: Director-General KIM Jong-han of the Department of Indo-Pacific Studies; Professor KIM Han-kwon; Assistant Professor PYO Nari; Assistant Professor OH Seung Hee; Research Professor CHOI Jinbaek; Researchers PARK MYUNGA and SUH Kyuhyeong; and Third Secretary YU Seungyeon.
From the CIIS side, Vice President LIU Qing; Director LAN Jianxue of the Department for Asia-Pacific Studies; Special Research Fellow XIANG Haoyu at the Department for Asia-Pacific Studies; Assistant Research Fellow LI Min at the Department for Asia-Pacific Studies; Research Fellow PIAO Guanghai; and Professor HAN Xiandong of Political Science and the Director for the Korean Peninsula Studies (CUPL), participated in the meeting.
On November 7, 2024, the IFANS delegation and Senior Executive Director LEE Moon Hee held the 17th Korea-China-Japan Trilateral Cooperation Forum, jointly with the CIIS and the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).
Established in 2008, the forum convenes annually to promote cooperation and dialogue among the three countries.
During the closed-door forum, experts from Korea, China, and Japan held candid discussions on:
■ An assessment of the current state of Korea-China-Japan relations: challenges and opportunities,
■ Outlook for Northeast Asia’s security landscape, and
■ Future cooperation pathways among the three countries.

Participants from the Chinese side included: Vice President LIU Qing of the CIIS; Director LAN Jianzue of the Department for Asia-Pacific Studies (CIIS); Du Lan, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute; Special Research Fellow XIANG Haoyu at the Department for Asia-Pacific Studies (CIIS); Research Fellow DONG Xianglong at CASS; and Director PAN Xiaoju of Northeast Asia Studies at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR).
Participants of the Japanese side included: Chief Executive Director YOSHIDA Tomoyuki of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA); Research Fellow IIIJIMA Yumi (JIIA); MASUDA Masayuki, Head of China Studies at the National Institute for Defense Studies; and Professor MARUKAWA Tomo at the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo.
On November 8, the IFANS delegation also visited CICIR for the 10th Korea-CICIR Bilateral Dialogue. The discussions covered current dynamics on the Korean Peninsula, particularly the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia and North Korea-Russia relations, Korea-China-Japan cooperation frameworks, and policies regarding the 2024 U.S. presidential election outcomes.
