The Center for Diplomatic History Studies of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) held the third seminar in the series, “President Syngman Rhee’s Perspective on International Politics and ROK-U.S. Alliance.”
During the seminar, participants discussed the following topics:
■ Enriched understanding of the “diplomatic independence” within the history of Korea’s independence movement
■ Revisit of the international political history surrounding the Korean Peninsula during the Korean War
■ Reinterpretation of early ROK-U.S. relations
KNDA Chancellor CHOE Hyoung-chan delivered opening remarks, and Senior Advisor AHN Youngjip to the Center for Diplomatic History Studies moderated the seminar. YOO Na-young, Research Fellow at Sungshin Women’s University’s Institute for East Asian Studies, presented on “Syngman Rhee’s Diplomacy in America during the U.S. Military Government as the Foundation of Liberal Democracy in Korea.” Following the presentation, KIM Myongsub, Professor at Yonsei University, delivered a presentation on “The ROK-U.S. Alliance and Korean Unification: Syngman Rhee’s Diplomacy after the Korean War.” The following discussions were led by YANG Joonseok, Professor at Kookmin University, and YOO Ho-yeol, Emeritus Professor of Korea University, focusing on Syngman Rhee’s commitment to independence, his endeavors to establish a provisional government, and the transfer of the Korean issue to the United Nations.
