Background: The Israel-Hamas War in Gaza and Escalation of the Conflict

The Middle East is teetering on the brink of a full-scale war as of August 14, 2024. The Israel-Hamas conflict, which erupted after Hamas’ surprise attacks on Israel on October 7 last year, has escalated throughout the region. At the initial stage of the conflict, Israel responded with intense military retaliations to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages. Israel’s response was regarded as legitimate retaliation against Hamas’ atrocities at first. However, the situation began to fluctuate as the civilian death toll in Gaza rose sharply. More than 40,000 Palestinian civilians were killed, which fueled widespread outrage and changed international opinion. Israel finds itself increasingly isolated on the global stage as the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza hits the 300-day mark. The disproportionate number of Palestinian casualties has led to mounting international criticism of Israel’s actions. This backlash has come from the United Nations (UN) and other international judicial bodies. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Additionally, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is investigating allegations of genocide against Israel, further intensifying the country’s diplomatic isolation.
As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to escalate, Israel is facing growing threats from major non-state actors in the region. Non-state actors such as Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, the Islamic Resistance of Iraq (IRI), and Syria’s Imam Hussein Brigade have increased their hostile activities against Israel. These militant groups, seizing on the momentum generated by the Israel-Hamas war, are mounting concerted efforts to intensify pressure on Israel from multiple fronts. Hezbollah has already engaged in intermittent clashes with Israeli forces along the northern front, further destabilizing the region. The Houthis in Yemen have targeted Israeli interests in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime chokepoint in the Red Sea. The Houthis have sought to disrupt the passage of Israeli-linked ships through this strategic waterway. The Houthis also launched a drone attack on Tel Aviv on July 19.
