1. Terms and Conditions of the Ceasefire
2. Background of Accepting the Negotiation
3. The Involvement of the U.S.
4. Implications and Outlook
At 11:15 a.m. local time on January 19, 2025, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect. The Gaza conflict, prompted by Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has left extensive devastation in its wake. A total of 1,589 Israeli citizens lost their lives, with 251 individuals taken hostage. According to estimates from the Gaza Ministry of Health, Palestinian casualties from Israel’s retaliatory strikes amount to 46,645 deaths and 110,000 injuries.
The Gaza crisis escalated into a regional conflict, drawing Iran into the fray. Pro-Iran armed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen, and Shia militias in Iraq and Syria intensified pressure on Israel, leading to Israel’s unrelenting counterattacks. The situation teetered on the brink of escalation into a full-scale international war. Meanwhile, the international community made concerted efforts to de-escalate the armed conflict. After prolonged mediations led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar beginning on November 21, 2023, the conflict has come to a halt 15 months after its outbreak.
