Seoul Diplomacy Forum

On November 17, 2023 from 10:00 to 16:30, the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) hosted the Seoul Diplomacy Forum 2023 on the theme of “ROK-U.S. Alliance: Beyond 70.”
 

 
 
The forum provided a platform for experts well-versed in diplomacy and security from South Korea and around the world to engage in insightful discussions focusing on topics such as Alliance Networks in the Indo-Pacific, ROK-U.S. Alliance: Korean Peninsula and Beyond, and Trilateral Cooperation in Economic and Technology Security.

 
 
Chancellor PARK Cheol-hee of KNDA emphasized in his welcoming speech about the increasing importance of trilateral cooperation among the ROK, the U.S., and Japan. He highlighted the need to strengthen cooperation by expanding the rules-based order throughout the Indo-Pacific and by advancing the elevated ROK-U.S. alliance into a global comprehensive strategic partnership.
 


In his keynote speech, Professor KIM Sung-han at Korea University (former National Security Advisor to the President) pointed out the importance of actively communicating about the strategic value of the ROK-U.S. alliance to the citizens of both countries. He highlighted that the ROK, the U.S., and Japan shall play a pivotal role in coordinating security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
 
 

 
Under the title, "Ambassadors’ Roundtable: Alliance Networks in the Indo-Pacific," Session 1 was moderated by Chancellor PARK Cheol-hee of KNDA. The panel included H.E. Philip Seth GOLDBERG, Ambassador of the United States of America to the ROK, H.E. Maria Castillo FERNANDEZ, Ambassador of the European Union to the ROK, and H.E. Dawn BENNET, Ambassador of New Zealand to the ROK.
 
 

Session 2, titled “ROK-U.S. Alliance: Korean Peninsula and Beyond,” was moderated by Dean LEE Jung-hoon of the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University. The panelists included Chief Executive Officer Michael J. GREEN of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, former Vice Minister SHIN Beom-chul of National Defense of the ROK, and Director-General CHOI Wooseon of the Department of International Security and Unification Studies of KNDA.
  

Under the theme "Trilateral Cooperation in Economic and Technology Security," Session 3 was moderated by President BARK Taeho of the Lee & Ko Global Commerce Institute (former Minister for Trade of the ROK). Among the panelists were Secretary WANG Yunjong to the President for Economic Security, Director Mireya SOLIS of the Center for East Asia Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, Professor SUZUKI Kazuto at the University of Tokyo, and Professor LEE Hyo Young of the Department of International Trade and Economic Security Studies of KNDA.
